Applied microeconomist working on public policy evaluation in developing countries. Current research examines rural school consolidation, conditional cash transfer programs, financial inclusion through educational incentives, and climate disruptions to schooling. - Pieri, R. (2026). When school consolidation fails: Rural closures, labor supply, and crime in Brazil. Single-authored. Under revision for submission to a high-circulation economics journal. Estimates the causal effects of rural school closures in Brazil (1997–2023) using the doubly-robust staggered difference-in-differences estimator of Callaway and Sant’Anna (2021) on a panel of 1,579 treated and 132 never-treated municipalities. Identifies population decline, contraction of agricultural GDP, a 25-percentage-point enrollment gap, reallocation of agricultural production away from labor-intensive crops, a female-specific contraction of agricultural labor supply, and a rise in homicides concentrated among young men aged 15–29.
